Political Correctness
The obsession with political correctness is epidemic. Many public figures are persecuted for speaking incorrectly according to the PC police. The worst part is that definitions of the violations are constantly changing. Some people are exempt from an infraction while others may lose their job or even an elected position. Candidates have been destroyed by a media intent on enforcing the code of political correctness according to their own unwritten rules.

It's all about control and power over others.

PC is never designed to protect the dignity of individuals or groups who might be insulted or maligned. It's driven by cynicism, scoring political points, or trying to prove that the challengers to incorrect speech are morally superior. More likely, they are driven by a feeling of inferiority and are trying to prove to themselves with a pretense of moral outrage that they themselves deserve respect, not the "victims" of insensitive language. The whole process is a reflection of an authoritarian society.
Ron Paul explains the double standard of hate crimes, and the dangerous implications of political correctness taken to their eventual extremes, such as an all-gender draft, and the thought police:
Already there have been attempts at banning books and songs that contain words deemed offensive to particular groups. It will not take much for the political correctness movement to target the correctness of political ideas. All totalitarian societies seek to control thoughts and ideas.

Communication Control
My job requires communication skills and luckily, I don't have to censor for the sake of PC *much*. But having the ever analytical mind interested in better communicating with people I might offend, I notice things. Dr. Paul is correct, political correctness has nothing to do with protecting others.
But I'll go you one further, it's deliberately designed to do two other things: First, to limit communication between free people based on a label designator of who each person is relative to society and it's expectations. There's an automatic script each label uses to communicate with people with a different label they might offend. This incites fear in both parties, makes them wary and fearful, breeds resentment for the obfuscation and ultimately inhibits meaningful dialogue that focuses on common ground.
This inequality prevents healing and understanding by creating inequality. To create a man of great wisdom in his own right, Robert Anton Wilson, communication only occurs between equals. If we can't talk to each other because we're limited to preset speech, then how are we ever going to work together as free people?
And second, magic. Not stage magic or occult magic, word magic. By controlling HOW we communicate, they get to make the definitions. And not only words, the words in these preset scripts we use to talk to other labels. Then they dumb us down so we won't have the variety of words they do or remember the true definition. Then when we passionately express them, we're censured for not using small polished words that hide the truth.
And it boils down to this, we are encouraged NOT to speak from our hearts. We must censor ourselves and find ways to shadow our real truths for fear of offending. So while we're creating the lie we'll use to communicate with others that day, we lie to ourselves and feel so guilty, we start believing it ourselves. And once we see those labels as free people just like us again, we can toss PC. Then we take our knocks as people because we've grown larger than the labels we're assigned.
Words have only the power we give them and those that control said words control the meaning behind them. I'd love to see us take them back and use them with deep abiding passion and conviction. Face it, if we respect each other enough to really listen, the insults and slurs will disappear, but for now, we keep giving them power they don't deserve. We're not victims, we have choices and we will not be treated as idiot children. We're better than that and we know it.
